Jean-Joseph Mouret's "Fanfare-Rondeau" has been splendidly transcribed, reduced, and arranged by Seth T. Vatt into this performing edition for the Momus Trombone Quartet. Digital download includes score and four trombone parts.
The key of C major showcases brilliant duet-like harmony in the first and second parts while the bass line drives a prominent cut-time feel. Editorial markings include added dynamics, as well as a more lyrical second section book-ended by the fanfare motif. Players should feel free to add ornamentation as desired and where appropriate. This arrangement is equally suitable for quartets with two bass trombones, and at a moderate difficulty level is perfect for weddings, church services, and recitals.
French Baroque composer JEAN-JOSEPH MOURET (1682-1738) was born to an average middle class family that greatly supported and encouraged his education and musical career. His gifts as a singer led him to prominence in Paris at the court of Anne, the Duchess of Maine where he worked with the Paris Opera and Academie Royale de Musique, composing dramas and music via patronage of the elite. Unfortunately, a string of musical disappointments combined with a budding jealousy of then upcoming composer Jean-Phillipe Rameau led to a financial decline. Driven to madness, he passed away in a church-run asylum.
While most of his work has been forgotten in today’s performance venues, the “Fanfare-Rondeau” from the first Suite de Symphonies has garnered some mainstream pop-culture attention as it is widely recognized as the theme to the show Masterpiece Theater.
